Small Daily Habits

Don't consume yourself with thoughts like "I have to be the best guitarist, pianist, vocalist etc...

Long term goals can be good for initial motivation, but can also overwhelm us and keep us a bit stuck.

Focus on small daily habits instead.

I promise you - if you simply focus on small daily practice habits - the results WILL take care of themselves!

What small habit can you start today, and be able to realistically repeat tomorrow, and the next day, and the next....?

"I will set a timer and practice four chords - G C D Em (guitar diagram below) - for 5 or 10 minutes EVERY NIGHT before bed."If you form this one simple daily habit, I GUARANTEE within just a week or so your skills will drastically improve!

Self-Discipline over Discipline

dis·ci·pline: noun

"the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience."

self-dis·ci·pline: noun

"the ability to control one's feelings and overcome one's weaknesses; the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it."

Objective discipline (social oppression) has a way of instilling a certain amount of shame. We're being punished for something we either did or did not do. When this happens, there's a tendency to feel that WE are inherently "bad".

That's what shame is.

Why not use the mode of SELF-DISCIPLINE to achieve the desired outcome of DISCIPLINE and bypass the negativities of shame..?

• relieves the "need" for punishment - taking it out of the equation

• bypasses shaming

• bypasses the potential lowering of self-esteem

• instills self-motivation

• instills confidence

• instills leadership qualities

• forges a stronger "think for yourself" mindset

• helps a person to navigate the world with vision

• they learn to trust themselves

• stand up for themselves

• empowers the person to trust their instincts and act upon them with conviction

• eliminates the "need" for approval from others

Recognize there are still CONSEQUENCES to straying from your SELF-DISCIPLINE; which mainly results in feeling GUILTY that you've let yourself down. GUILT can be a good reminder to stick to your SELF-DISCIPLINE habits and behaviors. A way to gauge where you are in that moment.

Did your actions lead you toward your life goals or veer you off course? THAT is how guilt can be used in a positive way. Remember... GUILT is COMPLETELY different than SHAME.

Clearing The Path

Being an artist isn't always about acquiring new knowledge or skills. It has more to do with simply clearing the way so you find the open ground for your pure, authentic self expression.

Like plowing snow to make travel possible, easier, smoother.

Ask a different question.

Instead of: "What new knowledge can I adopt?"

Try: "What's one thing I may be holding myself back with?"

Remember - always take 100% responsibility.

This is YOUR journey. This is YOUR work. No one can hold you back but YOU.

Quick Thought On Sharing Your Art...Yourself

It's ego that pays attention to self rather than giving attention to others; and giving attention to others is the entire point of sharing. Decide to take the focus off of yourself and simply serve.

On Authenticity And Personal Freedom

Chasing the prizes that society tells us we must want can drive us from our true selves. How many artists turned from their art because they were told they had to make money in a traditional way? How many talented people shirk their strengths to fit into a more needed but less fulfilling role? How many have given up their dreams in order to follow a more secure and profitable and socially accepted path? The aims of others (our parents, our teachers, our spouses, our fans) can become OUR aims if we are not vigilant. Stay in tune with YOUR vision YOUR hopes YOUR dreams YOUR-SELF Art is needed. YOU are needed. Don't cheat the world or yourself by diminishing your potential...by not living with authenticity and personal freedom of expression.
