Easy Songwriting Idea: Melody Variation.

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 by Jake Hahn | Uncategorized

Remember to step away from your song.

Get a birds-eye-view of it once in awhile.

As you work in one area, don't forget that there are other ingredients to it.

or what I call the "5 Elements of A Song".

Which are...

• Rhythm

• Harmony

• Melody

• Structure

• Lyrics

It can be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture when you're working on one element at a time.

Here's a little exercise for ya:

You're gonna use 2 of the 5 elements for this.

Harmony & Melody.

Chord Option: G

Melody Note Options: G A B C D

Your main focus here is on MELODY. So play your available G chord and see how many variations you can come up with to make your available melody notes sound interesting over that single G chord.

Come up with AT LEAST 3 options

That's it. That's your exercise.

It's an exercise in creativity!

Limiting your information forces you to be inventive!

It also helps to relieve you from overwhelming yourself with options which leads to getting things done - instead of experiencing "analysis paralysis".

So remember to "zoom out" once in awhile and see your song as a whole. You may be tired of hearing that same old chord, but if you add a fresh new melody over it...that one single element could change it into something entirely new and exciting!

Give it a go!

3 Steps To Rockin' Any Stage

Friday, March 13, 2015 by Jake Hahn | self development

Be BOLD

In a live "performance" situation - show confidence - even if you have to fake it at first!

Confidence reflects a level of competence. When ya show one...the other is assumed.

More importantly - when you FEEL one - the other is FELT inside of YOU.

That point is CRUCIAL.

Because what you FEEL on the inside is what you SHOW on the outside!

...and in a "performance" situation that is EXACTLY what you want.

Competence & Confidence exist in a loop; and are always working together in our favor ?

So, go ahead! Start to work on one, and watch the other rise!

You have to CHOOSE, GATHER, and RIDE!

Here's how:

1. CHOOSE to generate confidence:

Simply decide to have it. Make it an intention. You don’t need to achieve anything more, you simply need to decide to feel and generate it.

2. GATHER more competence:

Gather more knowledge, skill, craft, and abilities in the areas that you are passionate about and need to perform well in.

3. RIDE the momentum:

You have to take action! Aim for progress NOT perfection. The more action you take the more progress you’ll sense. This is how momentum is generated!

Taking action and implementing these 3 steps into your daily life - with PURPOSE - will help you in making significant leaps forward in your ability to command ANY stage there is!

Because when you take command of yourself, the outside world no longer feels like an enemy.

You can rest assured that what you have to offer the world is worthy of sharing, worthy of support, and worthy of applause. ?

4 Reasons To: Tweak Your Attitude

Tuesday, March 10, 2015 by Jake Hahn | self development

Your attitude toward the things in your life makes all the difference in the world.

Consider the amount of focus and energy you bring to a practice session.

Think about the difference it makes in the quality of your experience!

You are not powerless! You can actually CHOOSE! You can DECIDE how you want to feel; and your level of energy is determined by your will to GENERATE it!

That's right! You GENERATE your attitude at any given moment in your day!

I stress this - because it plays such a POWERFUL role in the overall quality of your practice sessions!

If you supply yourself with the "right" mental attitude toward practice/learning before you begin, then you will experience MUCH greater benifits from it.

Such as...

GROWTH

FASTER progress

QUALITY results

DIRECTION

So check your attitude...

If it isn't an attitude of positivity, passion, and purpose... Change it!

Frustrate Yourself Forward

Monday, March 9, 2015 by Jake Hahn | self development

Remember this - you'll never experience frustration when you're off by a long shot.

You only become frustrated when you are really close to achievement.

So the next time you're frustrated

DO NOT QUIT!!

Instead, use it as motivation to push even harder...

you're obviously almost there :)

3 Steps To: Becoming A Better Musician MUCH FASTER

Sunday, March 8, 2015 by Jake Hahn | music writing

This is gonna be short, sweet, and to-the-point!

Stop wasting your valuable time!

When what you really want is to "get better" at your:

• guitar playing

• singing

• piano technique

• songwriting craft

• lyric writing skills etc....

Whatever it is for YOU! I repeat. You must - STOP WASTING YOUR VALUABLE TIME!

YES! YOUR time is THE MOST valuable thing you have!

I see it happen all too often!

Let me give you a typical scenario: (while coaching a client)

Me: "What would YOU like to approach today? What do you feel you need to work on in order to truly progress right now?"

Client: "uuuhh....?"

Me: "Okay, well let's think about it together."

Client: "okay."

Now - If I were to let this client go on their own here...they would inevitably walk themselves in circles. They would most likely follow whatever random whim came to them. I'VE SEEN IT SO MANY TIMES! This basically means they are not in the drivers seat of their very own journey.

That's sort of a scary thought ?

So...we go ahead and chat-it-out. My goal here is to NARROW IT DOWN!

Based on that snippet of our conversation, you can plainly see that the client has NO CLUE where to place their - all important FOCUS!

SO...this is where WE start. (we're in this together, ya know?)

This is what YOU have to do.

The 3 Steps

1. Choose ONE thing

Be EXTREMELY specific here! For example: if you're a guitarist - don't just say "I'm gonna practice chords". DELIBERATELY CHOOSE to narrow it down even further! Maybe something like this. "I'm going to practice experiencing what my fretting hand fingers FEEL like, and what they need to be able to do in order to switch between the G C D & Em chords; and I'm gonna set a timer and do this for exactly 10 minutes."

2. DESIGN your session

Designing your session means to:

• choose the time of day

• choose the duration

• decide on your purpose

• choose the material

Make your choices. Prepare yourself. Get to it.

3. Say NO to distractions

You have a passion. You have a goal. You have something that you REALLY desire to have in your life!! • turn the TV off • drop the gaming controller • stop browsing random web sites These things - while they CAN be enjoyable - (I know I personally enjoy them at times) can absolutely distract you from what you REALLY WANT! So take notice. Take the time. Take action.

I use these steps almost every-single-day with my clients, AND for myself.

THEY WORK like a charm every time

Give 'em a shot!

See for YOURSELF!

As always. I'd LOVE the chance to help YOU along YOUR path!

How To Get Real: Thinking VS Doing

Friday, March 6, 2015 by Jake Hahn | self development

I pay attention to what people say. CLOSE attention.

But I pay even CLOSER attention to what people actually DO.

Let me explain what I mean...

I sometimes come across clients who - when presented with seemingly "basic" information - such as a standard chord progression using an open position G chord to an open position C chord (for guitar players) - have this to say to me...

"Oh, I already know those chords."

Implying that they're ready to move on.

They're ready for bigger and better things! More complex ideas!

They simply want... VARIETY!

BUT! Be aware -

VARIETY = NOVELTY = TEMPORARY EXCITMENT

Put on the spot - most of the time they're unable to play those 2 "basic" chords in a musically interesting way. They tend to lack command of: Consistent strumming patterns, stamina, tone control, rhythmic dynamics, clean & clear notes, changing seamlessly from chord-to-chord, arpeggiation, and/or a firm grasp of the progression etc...

These are all things that musicians NEED to be able to do in order to make good sounding music happen!

Now...

These 3 ideas will be CRUCIAL for you: really consider them

1. Understanding something doesn't mean you've embodied it.

2. Knowledge isn't enough to actually make change happen.

3. Intellectual understanding does NOT equal physical/technical skill.

In short: THINKING vs DOING = TALK vs ACTION

This is where repeated physical repetition (ACTION) comes in, and why it's so important to know the difference between THINKING & DOING.

Consider this -

Amateurs practice until they get it right.

Professionals practice until they can't get it wrong.

This is a great way to gauge your overall skill level.

For example:

Consider how well you can actually perform a particular song.

• is it effortless?

• are you still having to think?

• does it still take concentration?

Remember this: for the listener - the technical skill of the artist is assumed.

As a listener - I don't really want to watch you think about what you're playing on a technical level.

I want authenticity.

I want to hear the story behind your lyrics. I want to feel how you feel. I want to be moved in some way.

So...really take a moment and consider these things:

Do you REALLY understand?

Can you actually PERFORM?

Do you OWN the technique?

Have you TRULY POLISHED your skill?

Do you REALLY have it down?

If you're gonna chase something new...if you're gonna chase NOVELTY...

Make sure you're chasing it ON PURPOSE!

Be honest with yourself. Live up to your potential. Don't assume that you're too advanced for fundamentals.

None of us are.

Positivity

Coaching Tip:

The more positives we see and project onto our students and/or clients,

the more they "live into" that expectation.

6 Steps To Songwriting

Wednesday, March 4, 2015 by Jake Hahn | songwriting

Eliminate confusion and overwhelm when you're writing a song!

Look at the process as a whole.

What steps do you take?

Where are you in the process?

Did you skip a step?

Are you randomly "noodling around"?

Do you know EXACTLY what you're working on?

You've gotta KNOW what to expect!

Be able to maneuver your way through the sometimes choppy and unpredictable waters of writing a complete song - you NEED to know this stuff!

For example:

If you're POLISHING your song when you SHOULD be DEVELOPING your song then you're simply treading water - you're not really moving along at all. Or if you're DEVELOPING your song - but you haven't taken the time to SET UP your space and recording device - then you run the risk of say -forgetting a melody you have, or missing out on capturing other really good ideas. All because you skipped your SET UP.

Here's how I view the process:

SET UP

STARTING YOUR SONG

DEVELOPING YOUR SONG

POLISHING YOUR SONG

RECORDING YOUR SONG

RELEASING YOUR SONG

It's crucial to "begin with the end in mind".

Know the result you're after before you even start!

Be honest with yourself.

I like to compare it to the old carpenters adage -

"measure twice - cut once."

If you take a moment to observe where you are and what you need to do in order to move your song(s) forward, then you'll have a much clearer view as to how to do so.

Wherever you are...START THERE!
